A TREACHEROUS JOURNEY TOWARDS SUCCESS BY TEAM PRIMUS

“Team PRIMUS” the name Primus was chosen as it was their first try in the competition. This team won in two categories of FORMULA Student UK ,a motorsport competition held at the UK’s Silverstone Formula 1 circuit .It was an engineering student team composed of members from varying disciplines of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology.  Before coming to success lets know about the struggle the team faced.

We DYDF-India team got an opportunity to talk with them.

Asking about from where the dream of making a racing car was dreamt- “A shared love for cars and fascination towards machinery in the engineering 1st week is what brought a bunch of mechanical engineering students together”, Antony Biswas said. He got inspired by seniors about competitions held in International levels. He felt competition is the platform where he can convey his knowledge practically. It was just another day when about a couple of them were talking about the IMechE Formula Student competition. Islam Rafi was also having fascination towards racing car and wanted to represent Bangladesh. With the hope of participating one day, a bunch of 1st year university students started conducting a study about what they were planning to do. During a time when teams weren’t even formed, Antony and Shudip Alam didn’t falter from doing their research. Team Primus within days of preparation for FSUK made a robot for robo war and they won the competition under ICT Ministry of the Government

These homegrown motorheads managed to pass the preliminary steps to go to the United Kingdom to showcase their little beast. The 28 members team consisted of girls and boys at the ratio of 1:6.Team Primus faced multiple challenges in sourcing parts and funding the project. With a target of participating in 2018, they started getting into the rules and regulations of the competition, preparing to tackle what was about to come. The reason for aiming to participate in 2018 was inspired by the fact that it was the 20th edition of the competition. Bangladesh having limitations to avail 165cc motor engine where it requires 600-700cc was the biggest hassle they had to face. This halted the plan temporarily, pushing them to pursue this glorious mission in 2019.Their car was named MHK-19,fastest Formula car of Bangladesh.

The TEAM worked to get the permit of bringing such an engine from the ministry, which was quite a mammoth task. At one point this team of 31 people had completely given up. After being permitted to import the engine ,there remained only a few days to catch 2019 FSUK. So much complication surrounded the usage of this engine that they weren’t even able to make the purchase tax free, paying a huge sum as a result. Various materials and equipment for the fabrication of the plan was gathered from India and some were made completely from scratch. Held up by the BGB, it took them countless hours and a showcase of all of their documents to convince the men in uniform that they were there for completely legal purposes. Once enough resource allocation was done, they were all set!

Asking about what kept them motivated for so long after facing so many hardships- With Antony the whole team was being stubborn at this dream. Antony didn't want to miss the chance to work with his knowledge and represent his country. He thinks being stubborn about positive work will surely bring positive success. His stubbornness about the competition helped his co-leader Rafi to work for gaining the dream. Sudip being very interested about automotive engineering and doing research about the competition he got a drive to stick with it. They got to understand every members competence sector and worked accordingly. Antony said ,”Like our liberation war ,every person in the team worked equally and everybody's success helped the whole project to be successful. Faculties of AUST Mechanical Department helped their students to keep the day dream burning when they failed to participate in 2018 FSUK. Pushed them to achieve something on behalf of the batch. They accompanied them till the last. Made all the paper works fast as possible.

FSUK awards in 29 categories. Team Primus aimed to win “Formula Spirit Award” and “Best New Comer Award”. Formula Spirit Award is said to be struggle award .They checked the struggle to pursue the dream of participating in FSUK, problem solving ability, functionality and the stress resolved to reach till the end. Best New Comer is Awarded judging in Static and Dynamic way. In the static case they submitted report of design, cost analysis report, business model presentation. Within a 100 words, the team was able to design their model that detailed the ways in which the car would be created, sold nationally and then sold internationally two years later, as per the case. Once they arrived in India to make purchases, the struggles kept on coming.

As new and 1st designers, they earned a massive amount of praise from the judges about how well they used their limited resource from Bangladesh. However, it seemed like the complications were just beginning. The cylinder nut had broken into the combustion chamber, once modified, and taken for a test drive, it was determined that something was still wrong. Out of 7 clutch pads there were only 4 which had burned out;2 cylinders were not firing simultaneously. They even had to fix their ‘ECU’, which is known to be the ‘brain of an F1 car’. ECUs are not something that is easily fixable, but on account of the unavailability of them during such a crucial period in the competition, they did what had to be done. Other teams supported them with various instruments, cooperated and shared knowledge. The members said irrespective of the awarded certificates they learned from supervisors, judges, top brand engineers about technical aspects. Every person they came through in that foreign land was modest, friendly, and eager to share knowledge. This whole journey helped them to work with time management skills, team goals, business goals.

After struggling, studying, and competing the team says there is unavailability of lab and research in the infrastructure of our country. Their needs more monitoring in school-college levels so that students understand every concepts then memorizing.  Rajanya Sarkar said, "Students from all over the world to participate more and more in this competition and there be more sponsors to help them. These competitions are organized for students to showcase talents which would bring diverse change in worldwide automobile sectors." Participation in this competitions will enrich countries automobile sectors. Founders of many international automobile companies come up with their stalls and create placement scope for talented students.

We DYDF-India team wishes them the best and all the success he deserves in the world.
